Observability

Collect signals without pretending they are a firewall.

In Zwall, observability means Agents collect bounded metadata and events, the Manager stores and shows them, and operators investigate in the console. On hosting nodes, observation programs pass packets. Detectors produce investigation signals. This is visibility in the same control plane as policy — not a silent drop engine and not a full-packet capture product.

Observability

Observability in Zwall is not OpenTelemetry-the-product

Zwall observability is infrastructure security visibility: service and authentication signals on Hosting Agents, bounded network metadata, detector events, Virtualization VM/interface inventory and traffic views, security logs, and operator dashboards.

It is not a SaaS APM and not a promise of lossless full-packet capture.

Sources

Where signals originate

Three families, kept distinct:

  • Hosting collectors — logs and service/panel/auth classes where configured.
  • Pass-only network observation — bounded packet metadata and conservative detector classes (scan, SYN-rate, UDP heuristic, burst, and related Hosting network signals).
  • Enforcement-node telemetry — security logs, blocks, Virtualization inventory and traffic-related console views from Agents that can drop.
Data Flow

Agents collect. The Manager is the system of record for what operators review.

Agents collect and upload. The Manager ingests security logs/events and Hosting observations into PostgreSQL-backed stores and shows them in the console. Live updates use a WebSocket path — not a public streaming SLA. Prometheus metrics exist (/metrics when enabled, auth-gated). Grafana dashboard JSON ships in-tree for operator-hosted Grafana, not a Zwall SaaS Grafana.

Signal flow and operator review

Review

What operators actually look at

Console views for logs, Hosting status/events, Virtualization/VM/interfaces, health, and traffic widgets. Where Hosting status can say permission_blocked or source_not_present, the product already distinguishes missing sources from invented events. That honesty is part of the product: missing telemetry is visible. See Reliability.

Difference

Telemetry is not enforcement

Signals belong in the Hosting Agent story. Enforcement belongs on Virtualization Agents and explicit block paths.

You can observe a hosting node and enforce on a hypervisor in the same Manager without collapsing profiles.

Profile Visibility Focus
Hosting Agent Service logs, authentication, network pass-only metadata, bounded detector events (investigation signals).
Virtualization Agent VM/interface inventory, traffic views, enforcement telemetry, security logs.
Security & AI

Relation to security and AI

Security detection (brute-force, flood/scan, RBL, GeoIP) belongs in the Security capabilities.

AI Preview may analyze already ingested security logs when the operator triggers it. It does not subscribe to Hosting sources automatically. It does not drop packets.

Boundaries

What is not collected or claimed

Explicit Non-Claims
  • No full payload / customer-IP dump on Hosting event APIs (category-safe).
  • No claim of lossless delivery.
  • No line-rate PPS publication.
  • No "attack heatmap product module" beyond ordinary charts.
  • Certificate-expiry Hosting metadata is not a PKI inventory.
  • ModSecurity Hosting path is global metadata, not per-site WAF.
Workflow

Evaluation Workflow

  1. 01 Review the Telemetry flow from Agent to Manager PostgreSQL.
  2. 02 Install the Hosting Agent on a test environment.
  3. 03 Generate test activity (e.g., failed SSH attempts, port scans).
  4. 04 Review the bounded metadata and events in the Manager console.
  5. 05 Review the Prometheus metrics or Grafana JSON if external visualization is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does observability drop packets?

Hosting observation programs pass. Enforcement is a different profile.

Is this packet capture?

No. Bounded metadata and events.

Do you ship Grafana Cloud?

No. JSON for operator-hosted Grafana.

Why is a collector empty?

Check Hosting status for permission or missing sources — Troubleshooting missing telemetry.

Can AI watch all hosting logs automatically?

No.

Is delivery lossless?

Event delivery is not claimed as lossless.
